Happy Wednesday! This is a big week in Duluth – it’s Grandma’s Marathon week! Whether you are coming to run, to cheer, or to just enjoy Duluth, the atmosphere in our city this time of year is tough to beat. I LOVE IT! Let’s take a look at all the fun you can find during race weekend and beyond:
First off, let’s talk Wednesday fun at Glensheen. Tonight and next Wednesday, you can enjoy Beer Garden at Glensheen, as part of their June Wednesday night series. A different local brewery is featured each week of Beer Garden. The event is free and runs from 7-9pm. Then in July, Concerts on the Pier make a return. Every Wednesday night, enjoy free music from the estate grounds or from the water! This year, they’ve added opening acts – so more music and more fun! See July’s lineup at glensheen.org.
And while we are talking Glensheen – be sure to check out their new exhibit this summer- “Gowns of Glensheen!” 16 gowns, and some additional pieces are on display throughout the mansion. A few of the gowns were actually worn by the Congdons! Others were donated, and this is the first time you’ll get to see them all on display. The exhibit can be seen as part of regular tour admission and will be up until Labor Day!
Speaking of new exhibits, the Great Lakes Aquarium opens their brand new exhibit, Raptor Ridge on Friday! The exhibit features Bogey, the aquarium’s resident bald eagle, and Horus, a turkey vulture who came to the aquarium last year. Raptor Ridge gives Bogey and Horus warm indoor space and access to the fresh air of the outdoors. You can see the new exhibit as part of general admission.
Alright, Grandma’s Marathon time! The fun kicks off Thursday with the Essentia Health Fitness Expo in the DECC Arena from 4-8pm, continuing Friday 10am-9pm. This includes race packet pickup! Runners, don’t forget you can prepare for race day all day Friday with the Michelina's All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner from 11am-9pm in the DECC’s Pioneer Hall. Also Friday, the free Whipper Snapper races are open to kids 14 and under at Bayfront Festival Park. Registration begins at 12pm, with the races at 2pm. Then the 26th annual William A Irvin 5K kicks off at 6:00pm. If you’re up for some entertainment Friday night head to the Big Top Tent - Phil Vassar is headlining! Now onto Saturday – the big race day! The 29th annual Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon gets underway at 6:15am. The Grandma’s Marathon Wheelchair Division takes off at 7:40am, followed by the 43rd Annual Grandma’s Marathon at 7:45 am. Keep in mind the race course again this year has been tweaked a bit due to Superior Street Reconstruction. After the races, get ready to Rock the Big Top once again with live music throughout the day and into the night. For a full schedule of Grandma’s Marathon weekend events head to grandmasmarathon.com.
After our busy Grandma’s marathon weekend – there is still plenty to do. Several regular Tuesday events are getting underway for the summer season – be sure to put these on your calendar! Duluth Pack is kicking off Tasting Tuesdays, which will be held the last Tuesday of June, July and August from 3-6pm. Enjoy free samples from local breweries and cideries while you shop! Doggy Yappy Hour at The Boat Club patio is back for another season. Every Tuesday from 5-8pm, bring your pup for drink specials and treats! And more free, live music – the Chester Creek Concert Series! Every Tuesday through August 13, bring your friends and a lawn chair to Chester Bowl. Concerts run from 7-8:30pm.
Wow! Can you tell it’s summer in Duluth?! So much to do. Good luck to all the runners this weekend and as always, we hope to see you soon!
