Nov 1st: Renegade Comedy Theatre presents "The Pillowman" by Martin McDonagh
Time: 8 pm
From Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh comes a pitch-black dark comedy that the New York Times hailed as "Unsettling and exhilarating...gripping." The result is a powerful work of theatrical fireworks that is both darkly funny and utterly terrifying, culminating in a shocking twist ending that reaffirms the very nature and purpose of art. $15 Adults, $12 Seniors/Students. All tickets are also subject to a $1 facility fee. Held at Teatro Zuccone, 222 East Superior Street.

Nov 1st- Dec 29th: Florence Nightingale Exhibit
Time: 12 pm-4 pm Tues-Sun
Florence Nightingale is best known for having founded modern nursing and helped improve the care provided by hospitals. She was named after her birthplace, Florence, Italy. Raised in England during the Victorian Age, her father provided her a good education through tutors, especially in classics and mathematics. She went on to seek a career in nursing, despite her family's disapproval. Up to that time nurses had mostly been religious, monastic women or untrained helpers of low repute. Nonetheless, she perceived a calling, and chose to rebel against the traditional woman's role as a wife and mother. Exhibit documents can be viewed at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum.

Nov 1st- Mar 22nd: Drawings by Frank Big Bear
Time: Museum hours are Tues 9 am -8 pm/ Wed -Fri 9 am -4:30 pm/ Sat & Sun 1 pm-5 pm
The Tweed Museum of Art is pleased to announce a major new exhibition featuring the drawings of artist Frank Big Bear. A resident of Minneapolis since 1968, Big Bear was born and raised on Minnesota's White Earth Reservation. He studied briefly with the legendary Ojibwe painter George Morrison at the University of Minnesota, but is considered to be a self-taught artist, relying on his dreams, intuitions, and on influences from his own study of art history and literature. Big Bear's art has a powerful energy all its own, but evident in it are the space- and time-fracturing effects of Cubism and Surrealism. Fritz Scholder's socio-political stances, and George Morrison's abstracted landscape designs, also influence his drawings. Frank Big Bear's art has achieved cult status among a younger generation of artists, paying homage to traditional Ojibwe culture, a contemporary search for spiritual meaning, and urban culture as well. Exhibit is held at the Tweed Museum of Art/UMD.

Nov 6th- Nov 8th: The Playground presents "Betrayal"
Time: 7:30 pm
The play begins in the present, with the meeting of Emma and Jerry, whose adulterous affair of seven years ended two years earlier. Emma's marriage to Robert, Jerry's best friend, is now breaking up, and she needs someone to talk to. Their reminiscences reveal that Robert knew of their affair all along and, to Jerry's dismay, regarded it with total nonchalance. Thereafter, in a series of contiguous scenes, the play moves backward in time, from the end of the Emma-Jerry affair to its beginning, throwing into relief the little lies and oblique remarks that, in this time-reverse, reveal more than direct statements, or overt actions, ever could. Tickets are $10. Held at The Play Ground Theatre.

Nov 8th- Jan 10th: Cecilia Lieder - Annual Solo Exhibit
Time: gallery hours
Lieder’s new works from 2008 will be featured along with her well know woodcuts & lithographs. Lieder is the director of the Northern Prints Gallery - which represents 40 regional printmakers and offers the widest selection of artist made prints in the region. She is a past recipient of the George Morrison Artist Award (2007), the Depot Foundation Artist Award (2006), a Mcknight ARAC Artist Fellowship and other honors. She is a small press publisher and her books will also be available, notably three new Calyx Press releases for 2008. Check the completely renovated Web site for more information!
