On August 27, 1971, a little more than a year after the celebration of the first Earth Day, Northland College hosted its first environmental conference. Among those invited to address the two-day conference were Senator Gaylord Nelson and Sigurd F. Olson. The conference became “the instrument of origin of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute,” as Robert Matteson, the founder of the Institute, wrote. Jul 14th: Big Top Chautauqua presents: "The Beach Boys"
Time: 7:30 pm
It’s time for the “Endless Summer” to hit Bayfield! Of course you know these hit songs: “Surfin’ USA,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “California Girls,” and “Good Vibrations.” Perhaps these songs conjure your best summer memories. Come re-live those times with Mike Love and the Beach Boys at the Big Top! You can define most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they’ve had and how many millions of albums they’ve sold. But these conventional measurements fall short when you’re assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. To be sure, this band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that it changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt. Tickets: $80/$94/$104. Event is held at the Big Top Chautauqua on Mt. Ashwabay in Bayfield, WI.

Time: 1:00 pm
Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing are the Okee Dokee Brothers, a Minneapolis-based bluegrass band who have been making their kid-oriented music since 2005. Their latest album, “Can You Canoe?” just won the Grammy Award for Best Children’s Music Album! The CD is a set of acoustic songs inspired by a month-long canoe trip the pair took down the Mississippi River, from Minnesota to Missouri. They dubbed it a “Mississippi River Adventure Album.” Their next album will feature tunes written while hiking The Appalachian Trail. Free. Event is held at the Big Top Chautauqua on Mt. Ashwabay in Bayfield, WI.
