Sep 8th: Duluth Art Institute Fall Kick Off Celebration
Time: 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
The Duluth Art Institute fall exhibitions schedule kicks off with two exhibits that explore the state of our world with a touch of whimsy and wonder. DAI Steffl gallery will play host to the work of Adam Swanson. A true community artist, Swanson began exhibiting in 2009 and has been on an upward trajectory of recognition ever since. He integrates contemporary political and social issues into his work with a dynamic sense of color and composition, keeping a light voice on heavy matters. In parallel to Swanson’s exhibit, Collegial will be on view in the Morrison gallery. Printmaker Lydia Diemer and performance and video artist Betsy Hunt have been working and living in close proximity to each other for the past year and are an excellent example of the way in which artistic partners can strengthen each other’s work. Collegial will premiere new work by the pair with further collaborative support from Riley Hanick and Zach Moser. The two exhibitions will be given their due with a celebration put on in partnership with Fitger’s Brew house. On September 8th from 5 to 7pm, guests will be treated to the music of Sarah Krueger and special handcrafted beer from the award winning Fitger’s Brew house. Limited edition pint glasses will be available for sale to help support programs of the Duluth Art Institute. The event is free and open to the public.

Sep 22nd: Duluth Festival Opera presents "Pocahontas: A Woman of Two Worlds"
Time: 7:30 pm
The Midwestern Premiere of a New Opera - Created by Minnesota award-winning composer Linda Tutas Haugen and librettist Joan Vail Thorne in 2007, this hauntingly beautiful opera re-tells the compelling story of the legendary Native American princess, Pocahontas and the tragic events that surrounded her unique life. The work relies on more reliable historical accounts to set aside the legends, half-truths and myths about her life. It seeks to examine the tragic causes of the intolerance and racial injustice that were born when the English settlers established Jamestown and to illuminate the cultural degradation of the First Nation peoples of America. The opera will feature performances by outstanding local Native American musicians. Tickets are $22-$42 with youth and group discounts available. Held at Marshall School – Fregeau Auditorium.
