Video and photos: Stunning aurora borealis lights up Duluth skies

By: Derek Montgomery MPR News Staff | March 18, 2015

The northern lights dance Tuesday, March 17, 2015 over Boulder Lake north of Duluth, Minn.

Conditions were right the second night in a row for an incredible display of the northern lights at Boulder Lake, north of Duluth.

Photographer Derek Montgomery captured it in photos and a time-lapse video. An intense but brief display lit up around 9 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

At Boulder Lake, green lights rolled, rippled, blew up and collapsed. The display danced across the northern sky for about 30 minutes before subsiding into a green glow for much of the rest of the night.

For those interested in the photo geek details, Montgomery recorded 402 images at 24 frames per second (with a couple brief stops to check exposure) between 9:36 pm and 11:42 p.m.
