The architecture of downtown hotels, restaurants and gift shops reflect the city's role in 150 years of maritime trade as one of the nation's leading ports and centers of wealth.
Glensheen Mansion and Congdon Estate, the embodiment of the period when the wealthiest Americans enjoyed the spoils of the post-Industrial Age, is a must-see. The 7.6-acre grounds and 39-room mansion on Lake Superior were built in 1905 by Chester A. Congdon, a teacher-turned-lawyer who made his fortune in Duluth off mining and investments.
