SPOTLIGHT ON A MEMBER
Lori Steinbach and Lisa Sundberg, Visit Duluth

Visit Duluth’s Spotlight on a Member for October is Renegade Comedy Theatre. Thank you to Katy Helbacka, Artistic Director, for answering our questions.

In our exciting interview with Katy Helbacka, we toured the new permanent home of the Renegade Comedy Theatre. If you haven’t seen the new downtown location at 222 E. Superior, this would be the perfect opportunity. The Teatro Zuccone is a newly remodeling, clean, contemporary, 120 seat black box theatre. The plan is to complete the remodeling in other areas of the theater by June 2009. They will have a new cinema for foreign and independent films. Plus, an undisclosed “Healthy Eating,” establishment, especially for the theater goers’ palate.

“Renegade’s primary focus is making people laugh, and to expand the genre of theater. “In 2009 we will produce two dramas and a musical in addition to our comedies – two straight, and four sketches. Renegade has a full schedule and a new look. As the Artistic Director during these positive changes, it seems we now have organization. We are able to focus on things such as marketing and grant writing. The best part is working with the local talent. Duluth has some extremely talented and creative people,” according to Katy.

Katy states “Renegade has been a diligent member of Visit Duluth. We are grateful and proud to be linked with so many creative and progressive organizations. These connections and support have provided helpful ideas and suggestions along the way.”

“In addition, future plans include a partnership with the Shakespeare in the Schools program, the creation of an Improvisation Comedy training facility, and taking an active leadership role in Duluth/Superior’s burgeoning arts community by producing bold, high quality productions that enrich, enlighten, and above all entertain!”

“Come see Pillowman playing October 23-25, 30-November 1, and November 6-8 at 8:00 pm. This is the perfect choice if you’re in the mood to get scared for Halloween. You’ll be terrified one moment and laughing the next.”

Thank you, Renegade Comedy Theatre for being our spotlight on a member.
