November 24, 2008 MEMBERSHIP NEWS Gail Walkowiak, Director of Market Services, Visit Duluth Visit Duluth welcomes the following new members: Sarah Jakubek Duluth Heritage Sports Center 120 South 30th Avenue West Duluth, MN 55806 (218) 464-1711 (218) 464-1713 fax sarah@duluthheritagesportscenter.com www.duluthheritagesportscenter.com The Duluth Heritage Sports Center is a cornerstone of Duluth area youth sports. Located on the historic Clyde Iron properties in West Duluth, The Heritage Arena boasts a year round NHL size ice facility. In the summers The Pavilion Arena will hold turf for youth sports such as soccer, softball and football and in the winter will house another NHL size sheet of ice. When you visit the Duluth Heritage Sports Center you will notice that the integrity of the preexisting Clyde Iron Building was kept intact during the renovations. Clyde iron was the manufacturer of the Whirley Crane and was instrumental in the construction of such projects as the Panama Canal and The Empire State Building. An original crane from Clyde Iron is still located in the lobby of Heritage Hall to keep the history of the site alive. The Heritage arena also depicts a mural of the founding families of youth hockey in Duluth, a collegiate wall, a state champion wall, and a showcase of hockey memorabilia that tells the wonderful history of winter sports in Duluth. SPOTLIGHT ON A MEMBER Lori Steinbach and Lisa Sundberg, Visit Duluth Visit Duluth’s Spotlight on a Member for November is Whole Foods Co-op. Thank you to Shannon Szymkowiak for answering our questions. The Whole Foods Co-op is a premier destination for really awesome organic and natural foods in the Northland. The roots of the healthy endeavor evolved in 1970 from a local Chester Creek home and the ambition of twenty people. As the co-op seedling grew, it was transplanted to various locations. The season and climate for natural foods blossomed in 2005 and expanded to 2,500 members at the location of 610 E. 4th St. Duluth, MN. Shannon Szymkowiak, the marketing and member services manager, experienced the transition of the “new” Whole Foods Co-op. The atmosphere is clean and colorful, bursting with fresh organic produce. Membership is very affordable but you don’t need to be a member to shop, eat at the Co-op’s Fog City Deli, or attend WFC-U, for a variety of cooking classes from well-known local and regional experts. The Whole Foods Co-op has been a member of Visit Duluth before Shannon became part of their management. “There was never a question of continuous membership to Visit Duluth. The local residents, travelers and tourists all need ways to locate natural foods and special dietary items, fresh deli picnics, and dried foods for camping, stated Shannon.” Shannon states, “The fall season is my favorite. Many local harvests’ are in with delicious squash, potatoes, and carrots. Our area offers many choices to eat and live natural and healthy lifestyles.” Thank you, Whole Foods Co-op for being our spotlight on a member. Whole Foods Co-op 610 East 4th Street Duluth, MN 55805 (218) 728-0884 www.wholefoods.coop “Thank you for the web cam, it provides me with a mini vacation via a click of my mouse! I love Duluth and the entire North Shore. The atmosphere and feelings I get are exactly what I look for in a vacation. I have traveled many places for vacations but Duluth is the city that calls me back time after time. I am fortunate enough to live about 250 miles away. I would make the same trip even if I were 2,500 miles away. For those who have to decide upon Duluth and other destinations around the world, take it from me, if you work hard or just need a break from whatever it is you do, Duluth will not only recharge your batteries , but it will leave such a great impression you are sure to return.” Mike S., Wayzata, MN If you would like additional members of your staff to receive the Membership News Brief, please contact Gail Walkowiak at gailw@visitduluth.com or call (218) 625-8104.
