SPOTLIGHT ON A MEMBER
Lori Steinbach and Lisa Sundberg, Visit Duluth
Visit Duluth’s Spotlight on a Member for December is Security Jewelers. Thank you to Jay Seiler, co-owner, for his response.
“Security Jewelers was started by my grandfather and uncle in 1924, we think. Back then they did not keep great records. Our original location was where the Radisson hotel is,” according to Jay.
In 1946 they moved to the current location of 307 West Superior St. “It is great being in the heart of downtown Duluth, especially with the advent of people seeking more urban living space. Today hundreds of people actually make downtown home and 5 years from now it will probably be in the thousands,” says Seiler.
Jay states, “we are locally owned and carry one of the Midwest’s largest selections of fine jewelry, watches and gifts. We carry many brands such as Rolex, Gucci, Mt. Blanc and Mikimoto which are generally only found in much larger markets. We want people to know that even if they are not dealing with an owner they are dealing with someone empowered to make decisions and with someone who will make sure they get the best value and service. And that no matter how much you wish to spend, we can help you and make sure you are comfortable.”
“Everyday we get to provide people with things that will become heirlooms and will be passed down to future generations. Although it may fade from our memory, the purchaser and their descendents get a lifetime of memories. You would think that our most memorable events are the major sales. The 10 and 20ct diamond sales, the $100,000+ sales, the companies who purchase 100 or more Rolex watches, the $80,000 Rolex sale. But really what sticks out the most, are the times when we may help someone select something they thought would be beyond their means.
In regards to when we joined best to check your records. Probably before Terry Mattson was born. We joined Visit Duluth because we know that tourists are vital for our business. Also, they are vital for our whole region's economy. We realize that not every visitor to Duluth will come in to our store but they will still spend money in Duluth which eventually will come to us. Some of our best customers are people who stumbled in here on vacation and have become life long customers. We see them every year and they call and email us.
My favorite local event is the NorthShore Inline Marathon. I happen to be an original board member for the NSIM and have skated in it every year. We get hundreds of tourists in our store and I try to steer them towards the aquarium, Skyline Drive and the Lakewalk. They are always impressed by what Duluth has to offer.
Duluth is a great place to visit. I know that a family can come to Duluth and spend the weekend for about half of what a similar weekend in the Twin Cities would cost.”
Thank you, Security Jewelers for being our spotlight on a member.
