SPOTLIGHT ON A MEMBER Lori Steinbach, Travel Information Manager, Visit Duluth Visit Duluth’s Spotlight on a Member for August is the Glensheen Historic Estate. Visit Duluth extends our appreciation to Lori Melton, for her response. Glensheen was built and completed in 1908 at the present location on London Rd. It was opened to the public for tours in 1979. Touring Glensheen is an authentic experience for tourists. It was left intact, no changes, from 101 years ago by the Congdons. The tourists see what Chester Congdon saw all the time when he came home. Lori’s favorite local event is the Polar Express Train during the holiday season. Her son has an obsession with trains and he enjoys the music, lights and the Polar Express story. Lori added that it’s a magical, phenomenal experience for kids. Some of Lori’s most memorable moments at Glensheen include Betsy Mason (Chester and Clara Congdon’s granddaughter) who brought Glensheen to life with her memories of her childhood visits during a tour of the estate. Finland’s President, Tarja Halonen, attended a luncheon at Glensheen during her summer visit to Duluth in 2008. Kara Goucher, runner and athlete, attended the Mother’s Day Brunch at Glensheen in May 2009. Also, during the Dolly and Me Tea (little girls and their dolls), the cast of the Nutcracker surprised the girls. Lori said they were so excited and thrilled especially when the Nutcracker story was read to them. Lori added that Glensheen was already a member of Visit Duluth when she joined the Glensheen staff six summers ago and feels Visit Duluth does an excellent job of getting people to Duluth and is a great vehicle to reach visitors. Thank you to the Glensheen Historic Estate, for being our spotlight on a member.
