SPOTLIGHT ON A MEMBER
Lori Steinbach and Lisa Sundberg, Visit Duluth

Visit Duluth’s Spotlight on a Member for September is the NorthShore Inline Marathon. Thank you to Chuck Carlberg for answering our questions.

The North Shore Scenic Drive is a voyage through some of America’s most unspoiled lands. Rollerblading the 26 mile marathon from Two Harbors to Duluth is truly a unique experience. Imagine, passing Russ Kendall’s Smokehouse in Knife River, rounding the corner, a cool breeze in your face, you can hear the waves lapping the shore, and the whir of the wheels under your feet. You see your destination of the Aerial Lift Bridge still in the far distance. You can do it! Are the enthusiastic words from all the onlookers along the way...

In 1996 Chuck Carlberg, George Hovland and a few friends started the NorthShore Inline Marathon becoming the largest, most scenic and exciting inline skating event. September 13, 2008 was the 13th annual.

A few fun details Chuck Carlberg thought might be of interest is: Topographically the inline course is all “Downhill!” It is not just a race for the Elite skaters; “we primarily cater to the recreational skaters of all ages from 13 years to 80+ years.” The average age is 37. 22 million people have purchased rollerblades; “it is a great sport for all levels.” If you have a pair you should get out there next year! He also is very grateful for all the assistance and enthusiasm of the volunteers every year.

“Two of the most memorable moments of our Inline,” Chuck states, “is when Chad Hedrick established the world record at 57minutes, and 18 seconds. Also, when we were recognized with awards, two years in a row, for being “the best organized race.”

“The NorthShore Inline has been a member of Visit Duluth since the beginning,” says Carlberg. “It is important to our success to be an integral part of Duluth’s tourism infrastructure.”

Thank you NorthShore Inline Marathon for being our spotlight on a member.

CONVENTION SALES
Anna Tanski, Director of Sales, Visit Duluth

CONVENTION SALES UPDATE
During August, Anna Tanski represented Visit Duluth at two national trade shows. The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) experienced near record attendance which was reflected in the highest number of qualified leads generated during this show to date! That was a tough act to follow for the HelmsBriscoe Partner Fair which also produced the highest number of leads and RFP’s ever. Visit Duluth and the DECC participate in these shows together and the follow-up process on converting these leads into bookings has already begun in earnest.
