Winter in Duluth
When the weather turns cold, Duluth becomes a winter wonderland
The change in seasons brings colder weather, along with stunning frozen vistas, a nearly endless array of winter activities, and cozy spots to warm up after a day spent taking it all in.
Duluth is nestled into the hills along the shores of Lake Superior. In winter, the lake provides a sparkling backdrop for the city and iconic landmarks like the Aerial Lift Bridge and two historic lighthouses that mark the harbor. A drive along Skyline Parkway showcases the city from end to end offering spectacular views of the shoreline and the St. Louis River area.
To start the holiday season, visit Bentleyville “Tour of Lights” for a spectacular drive-through tour under the glow of 5 million twinkling lights throughout a 20-acre park on the shores of Lake Superior. Duluth has events throughout the winter season, including fat bike racing, dogsledding, and more. Visit our Winter Events and Activities page for details.
It does get cold, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the outdoors. Bundle up and head outside for winter adventures for all levels and ability, in and around Duluth. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, Spirit Mountain offers an alpine coaster and the area's only lift-access fat bike ski area. Take advantage of a vast array of trails for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, or fat tire biking right in the city. Visit the popular skating rink at Bayfront Festival Park, or one of the dozens of ice rinks at our many local parks. Explore the surrounding wilderness on miles of snowmobile trails, or hit the slopes for downhill skiing, snowboarding, or tubing. Looking to try something new? Find a local guide to take you ice fishing, dog sledding, or iceberg kayaking.
When it’s time to warm up, we’ve got you covered! Downtown Duluth’s skywalk system lets you explore and stay indoors. You’ll find shopping, dining, and more, all in climate-controlled comfort. When you’re ready for a warm meal, there are cozy restaurants, cafés, and markets serving up delicious options throughout the city and surrounding area, and be sure to stop by a local taproom, cocktail lounge, or coffeehouse to sample our local specialties.
While you’re here, there’s plenty to explore, indoors and out. Make sure you plan some time for shopping. From major retailers at Miller Hill Mall to locally-made goods in the Lincoln Park Craft District and unique shops in Canal Park, you’ll find just what you are looking for. Explore the area’s rich history at a museum, visit a gallery or studio to view or create one-of-a-kind artwork, or check out the wildlife at a farm, zoo, or aquarium.
